Yearly Oral Health Reminders: Root Canal Therapy

Posted .

Root canal treatments are required when damage has occurred to the pulp of a tooth. Within the pulp lies the life force of the tooth, as it contains the connective tissues, nerve endings, and blood vessels of the tooth. However, if the pulp is damaged, it must be removed, or you risk tooth failure. Root canal treatments can remove damaged pulp and clean and seal the tooth.

Always be on the lookout for ways to decrease your risk for a damaged pulp, including through oral accident and injury prevention. If the root of the tooth is exposed, it otherwise may require the extraction of the tooth. However, with a successful root canal therapy, the tooth may be able to be saved.

If a tooth has repeated dental procedures over the years, it may have worn down the tooth enamel to the point that the tooth is now vulnerable to damage to the tissues in the root and the pulp. Due to the fact that tooth enamel cannot be rebuilt easily, tooth restorations such as dental bonds, dental fillings, and dental crowns may be required to ensure the pulp doesn’t end up damaged. If a pulp infection occurs, a root canal therapy will be needed.
